WARNINGS OF CCl4
Carbon Tetrachloride has not been used in many of the ways it previously was since the 1930's (i.e. household cleaners, in aerosol cans, as a refrigerant, and commercial dry cleaner) because it has been found to be toxic. Carbon Tetrachloride has been known to cause liver cancer in workers who were exposed to the compound and in a group of mice who were exposed to the compound liver tumors were present in 100% of the population. Breathing the vapor of CCl4 can make a person experience dizziness and nausea, it was discovered that it also caused damage to the central nervous system. Because of these harmful effects, Carbon Tetrachloride is rarely used as a cleaning agent or as a fire extinguisher. CCl4 has also been taken out of use in aerosol cans because scientists discovered that it was harmful to the ozone layer. Carbon Tetrachloride is however, still used in refrigerants despite its harmful effects on our health and the health of the earth.
